The Deep2 Galaxy Redshift Survey: Spectral Classification of Galaxies
We present a Principal Component Analysis (PCA)-based spectral classification, η, for the first 5600 galaxies observed in the DEEP2 Redshift Survey. This parameter provides a very pronounced separation between absorption and emission dominated galaxy spectra – corresponding to passively evolving and actively star-forming galaxies in the survey respectively. In addition it is shown that despite ...
متن کاملGalaxy Redshift Survey XIII : Spectral Energy Distributions for Galaxies in the Region of the Hubble Deep Field North 1
We introduce a new empirical function for modeling the spectral energy distributions of galaxies. We apply it to a sample of 590 galaxies in the region of the HDF with z < 1.5 using multi-color photometry with wide wavelength coverage combined with spectroscopic redshifts from our 93% complete R-selected redshift survey there. We find the following: • As expected, galaxies with strong signs of ...
متن کاملSpectral properties of galaxies in the Stromlo-APM redshift survey: clues on the local star-forming galaxies
We analyse emission-line properties of the bj-selected Stromlo-APM spectra (〈z〉 = 0.05). Because this is a representative sample, we can study the global spectral properties of the local galaxy population. We classify spectra according to their Hα emission, which is closely related to massive star formation. This study gives a comparative local point for analysis of more distant surveys. We sho...
متن کاملCanada-france Redshift Survey: Hst Imaging of High-redshift Field Galaxies
Hubble Space Telescope1 B and I images are presented of 32 galaxies with secure redshifts in the range 0:5 < z < 1:2 from the Canada-France Redshift Survey, a complete sample of galaxies with 17:5 IAB 22:5. These galaxies exhibit the same range of morphological types as seen locally, i.e., ellipticals, spirals and irregulars. The galaxies look far less regular in the B images (rest-frame ultrav...
متن کامل6 v 1 3 A ug 1 99 6 Close Pairs of Field Galaxies in the CNOC 1 Redshift Survey
A redshift sample of 545 field galaxies is used to examine how the galaxy merger rate changes with redshift, and how mergers affect the observed properties of galaxies in close pairs. Close pairs are defined as those with projected separations less than 20 h −1 kpc. At a mean redshift of 0.33, it is found that 7.1 ± 1.4 % of galaxies are in close physical pairs, compared to 4.3 ± 0.4 % locally....
